Why Discernment & Devotion
I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your statutes. -Psalm 119:125
In these days of uncertainty and challenge, one thing is clear: we, as the body of Christ, must pray fervently for discernment. Discernment is more than just a feeling or intuition; it is the spiritual ability to see clearly and make sound decisions guided by God’s wisdom. It is understanding what aligns with His will and separating truth from falsehood.
The Scriptures remind us of its importance:
"Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust your commands." (Psalm 119:66)
"The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly." (Proverbs 15:14)
God calls us to be people who not only recognize His voice but also act on His revelations with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. However, discernment is not automatic—it grows through prayer, study of His Word, and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
Why Discernment Matters Now More Than Ever
We are living in troublesome times, marked by confusion, deception, and division. The Apostle Paul warns us,
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:2)
Discernment enables us to navigate these complexities, test spirits, and distinguish between what is of God and what is not (1 John 4:1). It helps us make decisions that align with His will, avoiding distractions and traps laid by the enemy.
But discernment is incomplete without love—specifically Agape love, the selfless, sacrificial love that flows from God Himself. Without love, even the sharpest discernment can become harsh and judgmental.
Pray for Discernment and Love to Reign
Paul’s prayer in Philippians 1:9-10 is a model for us:
"And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ."
We need to pray for God to increase our discernment—not so we can boast about being right, but so we can be instruments of His peace and love. Along with discernment, we must seek:
Wisdom to apply what God reveals.
Knowledge to understand His ways.
Understanding to act with grace and compassion.
Above all, pray that love reigns in our hearts, transforming every decision, every word, and every action. Agape love is the foundation that keeps discernment grounded in God’s character.
Let us be encouraged! God has equipped us with His Word, His Spirit, and the privilege of prayer to face these times. When we seek Him earnestly, He promises to give generously:
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." (James 1:5)
So, let’s pray with boldness and faith, knowing that God will supply all we need. Let’s love extravagantly, reflecting His heart to a world desperately in need of it. Troublesome times may surround us, but with discernment sharpened by His Spirit and hearts overflowing with His love, we can walk in victory.
May we be a light in the darkness, a people of discernment, wisdom, and unshakable love. Agape love conquers all. Let’s pray it rains.
